TOP5 aircraft for flight schools in 2025

Today’s entry is dedicated to a topic that is particularly close to my heart, both as a pilot with many years of experience and as a person who heads a company that has been associated for years with providing the best solutions for Polish aviation. I’m talking about the choice of training aircraft – a fundamental decision for any flight school that aspires to be a forge of true professionals of the skies. The year 2025 brings new technologies and opportunities, but also challenges us to maintain the highest standards of safety and training efficiency. That’s why, based on my experience and market analysis, I have prepared for you a subjective but, I hope, valuable TOP5 ranking of the machines that, in my opinion, will dominate training fleets in the coming year. This is not only a review of equipment, but above all a reflection on what makes an aircraft an ideal tool for learning to fly.

TOP5: Best aircraft for flight schools

Choosing the right aircraft for training is much more than a commercial transaction. It is an investment in the future, in the safety of young aviation students and in the reputation of the center. A training machine must be patient, forgiving of the mistakes that are part and parcel of learning, while at the same time offering a platform for acquiring the skills necessary in the increasingly high-tech world of avionics. State-of-the-art avionics, predictable operating costs, and access to service all add up to success. At GB Aircraft, we have been listening to the needs of the market for years, advising and supplying aircraft for flight schoolsthat are synonymous with quality and reliability.

Our TOP5 Ranking: the best aircraft for flight schools in 2025

The market for training aircraft is dynamic, but certain designs have proven their irreplaceable value for years. After a thorough analysis of current trends, operational data and feedback from the industry, I have identified five models that I believe will form the backbone of modern training fleets in 2025. Each of them has unique features, responding to the diverse needs of flight training centers.

1. Cessna 172 Skyhawk – Unchanging Leader

It will probably come as no surprise to anyone that the Cessna 172 Skyhawk lands at the top of my list. It’s a true aviation legend, the most produced aircraft in history, which has served as a staple at flight schools around the globe for decades. The models scheduled for 2025 continue this glorious tradition with further improvements, especially in the area of avionics, which prepares students for the realities of modern cockpits.

  • Reliability and Durability: the Skyhawk has made a name for itself with its almost armored construction and extremely smooth flight characteristics. These are unmatchable qualities, especially in the early stages of training, when a student is just building confidence at the controls. Predictable behavior in the air, smooth stall entry and overall stability make learning on a Cessna 172 effective and less stressful. Its all-metal, aluminum construction can withstand the rigors of heavy use, and the sturdy, three-wheel landing gear is designed to withstand the countless landing cycles typical of training operations.

  • Modern Avionics: The latest Skyhawk units come standard with an integrated Garmin G1000 NXi avionics system. It’s a true “glass cockpit” that not only offers crystal-clear displays and faster data processing, but more importantly, it’s an excellent introduction to the advanced systems pilots will encounter in larger communications aircraft. Technologies such as ADSB In/Out, Synthetic Vision Technology and traffic and terrain warning systems significantly improve situational awareness and safety in training flights.

  • Operating Costs: Although the purchase of a new Cessna 172 is a considerable expense, its operating costs are considered reasonable. The proven and reliable 180 hp Lycoming IO-360-L2A engine provides good performance with acceptable fuel consumption. The availability of spare parts worldwide and an extensive service network are other advantages that speak in favor of this model.

  • Versatility: the Skyhawk is not only an aircraft for learning the basics of piloting for a PPL(A) license. It is also perfect for training for IFR (instrument flight) ratings and as a platform for building the airframe required to obtain a commercial pilot’s license (CPL). Many of the world’s renowned flight schools, such as ATP Flight School, regularly add new Cessna 172s to their fleets, which is the best indication of the trust placed in the design.

As GB Aircraft, we proudly represent the Cessna brand in Poland. Providing these reliable machines to our customers and watching them contribute to the development of the next generation of pilots is a source of great satisfaction for us.

2. PS-28 Cruiser – Modernity and Economy from Cruiser Aircraft

On the second step of the podium in my ranking I place the PS-28 Cruiser, manufactured by the Czech company Cruiser Aircraft. This is a relatively new, but extremely rapidly gaining popularity design, which is seen by many as a real “game changer” for aviation academies, offering excellent value for money. At GB Aircraft, we are the exclusive representative of Cruiser Aircraft in Poland and have seen firsthand how these state-of-the-art aircraft for flight schools are winning the hearts of instructors and students.

  • Cost Efficiency: One of the PS-28 Cruiser’s main strengths is its low operating costs. At a time when every penny spent per flight hour matters, the ability to reduce fuel and maintenance expenses, without compromising on safety, is priceless. Rotax engines, often used in these machines, are renowned for their economy and reliability.

The portfolio of the Austrian company Diamond Aircraft, in particular the single-engine DA40 Star and the twin-engine DA42 Twin Star, is synonymous with an innovative approach to training aircraft design. These are machines that I particularly recommend to schools wishing to offer world-class training, preparing pilots to operate technically advanced aircraft.

  • Composite Construction and Aerodynamics: Diamond aircraft stand out from the competition with their all-composite construction. This translates not only into a sleek, streamlined silhouette, but more importantly into excellent performance, low empty weight and increased fuel efficiency.

  • Advanced Garmin G1000 Avionics: As with Cessna, Diamond equips its aircraft with an integrated Garmin G1000 avionics system as standard. This makes them ideal platforms for instrument flight training (IFR) and for a seamless transition to the cockpits of today’s airline aircraft.

  • DA40 Star: This model is an extremely versatile aircraft that is great for both basic (PPL) and advanced training, including IFR. Its spacious, ergonomic cabin with panoramic fairing provides excellent visibility, and its low fuel consumption makes it an economical choice.

  • DA42 Twin Star: This twin-engine aircraft is a true revolution in multi-engine rating (MEP) training. Equipped with state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient Austro AE300 diesel engines powered by JET A1 fuel, it offers not only significantly lower operating costs (combustion can be up to 50% lower compared to traditional piston engines), but also quieter operation and better high-altitude performance. The Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system simplifies engine operation and enhances safety. The DA42 is increasingly being selected by airlines for cadet programs as a transition machine to jets.

  • Safety: Diamond attaches great importance to safety. This manifests itself in, among other things, excellent flight characteristics when flying on a single engine (in the case of the DA42) and a high aerodynamic perfection factor, which means greater range in case of engine failure and the need to glide.

At GB Aircraft, we watch with admiration the innovations introduced by Diamond Aircraft. While they are not our main fleet products, we understand their growing role in shaping future pilots. For schools targeting the advanced and airline-preparatory training segment, choosing Diamond aircraft can be a hit.
